Mary is a graduate of the University of Richmond, T.C. Williams School of Law and has practiced in both the Richmond and Hampton Roads areas. She is admitted to practice in all of the state courts of Virginia, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and the Western District of Virginia and the United States Tax Court. Over the past fifteen years, Mary has tried numerous cases in the General District Courts, Circuit Courts and the United States District Courts in Virginia.
Mary is the current President of the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association, Chair of the Professional Liability Section of the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, Secretary for the James Kent American Inn of Court and a Past President for the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Virginia Women Attorneys Association. Mary was recently honored as a member of the 2015 Class of the Influential Women of Virginia. This awards program recognizes the outstanding efforts of women in the Commonwealth in all fields, including law, business, health care, education and the arts and the honors are given to individuals who are making notable contributions to their chosen professions, their communities and society at large.
Mary is active in her community as a member and lector for St. John the Apostle Catholic Church and for the past two consecutive years, she has chaired the St. John the Apostle Catholic School Gala & Auction, the largest yearly fundraiser for the school. Mary is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Edmarc Hospice for Children, the first hospice in the nation designed specifically for children and the only pediatric hospice organization in Hampton Roads.
During her career, Mary has focused primarily on handling complex commercial litigation, insurance defense and professional liability defense. Mary serves as Pro Bono Counsel to the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of Virginia and as Special Counsel to the Virginia Department of the Treasury, Division of Risk Management for Automobile Liability Matters. She has been published in the Journal of Civil Litigation and frequently lectures on prevention of legal malpractice claims and ethics.
